MTV Video Music Awards Go Green
Green Day wins seven awards at the 2005 MTV VMAs.

Green Day
MIAMI, FL.  [Tuesday Aug.30.2005]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- If this year's MTV Video Music Awards was a color, it would be green -- as in Green Day.

Green Day was the big winner at the annual awards show on Sunday, earning Moonmen for seven of the eight categories for which the band was nominated.

Green Day was honored for clips from its Grammy-winning album, "American Idiot." The band was recognized for the "American Idiot" and "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" videos, which were both directed by Sam Bayer.

Green Day's "Boulevard of Broken Dreams" clip won Video of the Year, Best Group Video, Best Rock Video, Best Direction, Best Cinematography, and Best Editing. The band's "American Idiot" video also won the Viewers Choice Award, which is decided on by fans.

During the band's acceptance speech for the Video of the Year award, guitarist Mike Dirnt gave a shout out to US soldiers overseas. "Here's to our soldiers," said Dirnt. "Let's bring them home safe."

Billie Joe Armstrong talked about Green Day being together for 16 years and that the band had done everything themselves during that time. He also thanked all the artists who played Live Aid in July and offered words of inspiration for fans.

"Do the things that you f---ing believe in," said Armstrong. "This is what it's all about."

The one VMA that Green Day didn't win was Best Art Direction, which went to Gwen Stefani for her "What You Waiting For?" clip.

Green Day also opened this year's VMAs, delivering an energetic performance of "Boulevard of Broken Dreams," complete with fire shooting up from the stage.
