LOS ANGELES, CA  [Thursday Jul.7.2005]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- Gwen Stefani is getting personal on her next single, "Cool."

The song is about her good friend and ex-boyfriend, No Doubt bassist Tony Kanal.

Stefani tells MTV.com that she didn't intend to get personal on her solo debut "Love. Angel. Music. Baby," which she envisioned as more of a dance album. But when producer Dallas Austin asked for her help to finish a song he'd been working on, she couldn't help but think of her own experiences.

Austin had been trying to write his version of No Doubt's "Simple Kind of Life" but couldn't get the song where he wanted it. The track is about a romantic relationship that over time turns into a great friendship.

About writing the lyrics for "Cool," Stefani says, "No matter what you do, things just come out. It just ended this whole thing for me in my head, and it puts an end to a chapter in a really nice way."
