Simpson walks off stage when wrong vocal tape plays.
NEW YORK, NY [Monday Oct.25.2004] /Mix103FM.com/ -- Sounds like Saturday Night Live wasn't completely live for Ashlee Simpson.
Simpson was the musical guest on the October 23 program but at the start of her second song, "Autobiography," a vocal tape of the singer started playing -- for "Pieces of Me." Simpson was holding the microphone at her waist when the vocal track came on for the wrong song. Industry insiders say these "vocal guide" tapes are often secretly used by singers who lip synch or want to make their voice sound more powerful.
Simpson didn't know what to do when the vocal track began playing. The band continued to play, and Simpson started hopping around in a "hoe-down" dance before walking off the stage after about 35 seconds. NBC, the network that carries "Saturday Night Live," cut to a commercial.
Simpson blamed her band for the mishap, and her record company, Geffen Records, said in a statement that it was a computer glitch. Geffen explained that some pre-taped electronic percussion was supposed to play but instead, the "Pieces of Me" recording started playing.
At the end of the comedy show, guest host Jude Law joined Simpson onstage. Law said, "What can I say? Live TV." And Simpson responded, "Exactly. I feel so bad. My band started playing the wrong song. I didn't know what to do so I thought I'd do a hoe-down."
