Chad Kroeger Plans Time Off
Nickelback frontman looks forward to break when tour ends.

by Krista Desens

Nickelback
VANCOUVER, BC  [Thursday Jun.3.2004]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- You could say Nickelback is on "the long road" to promote its latest album. For the last eight months, the band has been on tour in Canada, Asia and South America, and now, Nickelback is rocking Europe for a number of festival and headline dates. Mid-to-late June, the Canadian rockers will take an 11-day break before diving into a US summer tour on June 30 in Milwaukee, Wisconsin. The whole road show ends September 4 in Seattle, Washington. And then, says singer/guitarist Chad Kroeger, "I'm gonna take a break for a while so I can come back and appreciate it all over again."

Kroeger is definitely looking forward to some downtime. In a recent interview, he told MTV, "I think Chad needs a break." He explained, "Right now, I'm really interested in enjoying where I'm at in life. I don't ever want to look back on this and go, 'Geez, when I was 29 and we were having such a ball, why didn't I just take off to some island somewhere and grow a beard and lay low?' I'm having a blast right now touring and making music, and I don't ever want to be standing onstage going, 'God, I hate this f---ing song. What am I doing here?'"

So what will Kroeger do with his time off? Maybe travel, he says, but at a leisurely pace. When Nickelback is on tour, the band members are working and don't have much free time to see a city. Said Kroeger, "Every time I get off the plane, I'm always like, 'What time is soundcheck? When do we get to eat?' " He notes, "I've seen the inside of hotels and arenas all over the world, and that's not a cool way to travel. People are like, 'Dude, what's Tokyo like?' And I say, 'Gee, I wish I could tell you.' "

Come September, maybe Kroeger will head to a tropical island. Says the Nickelback frontman, "I want to drink pina coladas and strawberry daiquiris on every continent." He added, "Rich kids get to do it after high school. I was never a rich kid, so this is my chance."
