Gwen Retro Trendsetter?
Can she bring back spats?

by Ellen Sawyer

No Doubt
DETROIT, MI  [Wednesday Feb.25.2004]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- Very few of us remember the trend in the 1920s of wearing spats, coverings for the tops of shoes and boots. Okay, so NONE of us remembers spats. Imagine a cross between leg warmers and lace-up footless boots. Sound totally rad? Gwen Stefani thinks so, according to London fashion designer Elizabeth Melinek, whose previewed her line in several shows at London Fashion Week. Her spat line, called "Strumpets" (loosely translated at "Hookers") is all the rage in London and she says "Customers tell me the spats cover pasty legs, look really sexy and keep you warm. They transform any outfit – you can even wear them over flip-flops." Smokin'! Spats & flip-flops! Get 'em while they're hot, fashionistas, they're retailing for about $375 a pair.
