British Music Industry Needs Dido
UK record sales look for turnaround.

by Ellen Sawyer

DETROIT, MI  [Tuesday Feb.17.2004]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- The British Phonographic Industry (BPI) reported last week a 2.1 percent rise in 2003 album sales following a disappointing '02 in which the UK industry saw its biggest sales decline in a decade. The BPI blames online piracy, CD burning, and growing popularity of alternative entertainment such as video games and DVDs for the downturn in sales. One record company, BMG, hopes that superstar Dido will help pull them out of a slump. With sales of over eight million copies of "Life for Rent" around the world since its September 2003 release, Dido means pound signs to BMG. Those three Brit Award nominations should help, too, as Brit Award winners usually continue to sell records long after the ceremony concludes.
