Native Americans Boycott OutKast
"Hey Ya!" Insults Heritage

by Ellen Sawyer

Outkast
DETROIT, MI  [Sunday Feb.15.2004]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- The San Francisco-based Native American Cultural Center is calling for a boycott of OutKast following what they call an "insulting" performance at this year's Grammy Awards ceremony. Andre "3000" Benjamin of OutKast performed their award winning song "Hey Ya!" while dancing around a giant green teepee in war paint, fringed costumes, and feathers, which has angered Native Americans nationwide.

Albuquerque record producer and musician Tom Bee, who was nominated for this year's Native American Music Grammy called the performance "degrading," and agrees with other American Indians who found it disrespectful to their culture and a perpetuation of Indian stereotypes.

CBS issued an apology, saying they were sorry if anyone was offended, but so far no members of OutKast have said they're sorry to the 2.3 million Native Americans who were upset by their performance.
