Stump, Legend Share Thoughts and Music At Songwriting Panel
Cee-lo a no-show, Grammy rehearsal runs late

by Laura Katz

Fall Out Boy
LOS ANGELES, CA  [Wednesday Feb.14.2007]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- Fall Out Boy's Patrick Stump, John Legend and five other songwriters joined up for a panel discussion called "How I Wrote That Song," held at the Key Club over the weekend in Los Angeles.

Gnarls Barkley's Cee-lo Green was supposed to be there but couldn't make it because he was caught up rehearsing for the Grammys.

Stump said of the songwriting process, "I don't touch (bassist) Pete (Wentz's) words and he doesn't touch my music. Pete gives me several paragraphs of lyrics, and I'll pick out something that works well with my music."

John Legend also had some wise words to say about his craft: "I start by focusing on the flow and the melody, and let that dictate what the lyrics are gonna be. It's like putting together the pieces of a puzzle."

In addition to sharing their wisdom and experience, the musicians also performed some of their hit songs for the sold-out audience. Stump performed an acoustic version of Fall Out Boy's single, "This Ain't A Scene It's An Arms Race," and Legend performed "Ordinary People" on piano.
