Ahmet Ertegun Dies At 83
Industry mourns loss of icon

by Laura Katz

Gnarls Barkley
LOS ANGELES, CA  [Monday Dec.18.2006]  /Mix103FM.com/ -- Ahmet Ertegun, co-founder of Atlantic Records, has died at the age of 83.

The music industry icon slipped and fell backstage at a Rolling Stones concert at New York City's Beacon Theatre in October. He fell into a coma last week.

Atlantic Chairman/CEO Craig Kallman said in a statement, "All of us at Atlantic Records are profoundly saddened by the loss of our founder and mentor. The music community has lost a pioneer and an icon, and we have lost our father. Ahmet changed the course of modern music and culture, and he will live on through the timeless legacy of work that was created under his direction and care."

Ertegun's private funeral will be held in Turkey, with a memorial to take place in New York after the new year.

Atlantic has been home to legends like Led Zepplin, The Rolling Stones, Aretha Franklin, Buffalo Springfield, Crosby, Stills, Nash and Young, Cream, Yes, John Coltrane, Roberta Flack, Rush, ABBA, Genesis and Foreigner. In more recent years, the label has brought us acts like Gnarls Barkley, Pretty Ricky, Danity Kane, Jewel, and James Blunt.
