It's been rumored that Jessica's folks were saying too much too soon about the affair, and it didn't match up with Mayer's more subdued style. According to Us Weekly, the relationship was the more the result of media spin than anything else and not nearly as serious as it appeared.

Simpson's publicist has also been fired, supposedly for his poor handling of the situation.
